WEST PLAINS, Mo. (AP) - A south-central Missouri newspaper staff writer has announced plans to try to run as an independent candidate in Missouri’s 8th Congressional District.

The Southeast Missouri reports (https://bit.ly/Mlg38F ) Terry Hampton wants to challenge Republican U.S. Rep. Jason Smith for the congressional seat in November and is starting to gather enough signatures to file as an independent candidate.

Smith won a special election in June and plans to seek re-election in 2014 in the district, which includes 30 counties in southern and Southeast Missouri.

Hampton, a staff writer at the West Plains Daily Quill, has to collect about 6,000 certified signatures to get on the ballot.

Democrat Barbara Stocker has also announced her intention to run against Smith in November.

A spokesman in Smith’s office said Smith didn’t care to comment.
