DECATUR, Ill. (AP) - A delegation from the east African nation of Tanzania stopped in Decatur to learn more about the natural gas industry.
The group from Tanzania’s Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority visited Ameren Illinois facilities to observe the utility’s gas delivery operation.
Although temperatures in Tanzania don’t require the use of gas for heating, members of the group say the nation is keen to tap gas reserves to fuel more electric power stations. Only about 20 percent of Tanzania’s 45 million people have access to electricity.
Director of electricity Anastas Mbawala (ah-NEH’-stahs m-BAH’-wah-lah) told the Decatur Herald and Review (https://bit.ly/1fBaZ9o) Tanzania projects 30 percent of the population will have access to electricity by 2016.
The group’s visit to Decatur was arranged by the Washington, D.C.-based National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners.
