MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) - A Long Island prosecutor has resigned from a state panel investigating corruption by public officials because she is running for Congress.

Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice sent a resignation letter to Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Wednesday.

Rice had served as co-chair of the state Moreland Commission.

The Long Island Democrat announced Wednesday night that she is running to replace Rep. Carolyn McCarthy, who is retiring.

Rice said in her letter to Cuomo that she wanted to safeguard the commission’s work from potential distractions that could result from a high-profile political campaign.

Political pundits have said the race just outside New York City could be one of the hottest House races in the country.

A spokesman for the governor did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
