Billionaire businessman Donald Trump, 67, said the time has come for him to get in the governor’s race, and he’s seriously mulling a run at the top seat currently held by New York’s Andrew Cuomo.
A few years ago, he spoke just as forcefully for a presidential run — that never took shape.
But just recently, Mr. Trump said he’s met with Republican Party leaders and vowed that he very well could spend millions of his hard-earned dollars to mount a challenge against the Democrat, The Daily Mail reported. At the same time, he tamed his rhetoric with this: “I’ve got time” to decide, The Associated Press reported.
“I believe, and many people believe, I’m the only Republican who can win,” he told AP. “I think I would win easily.
And he clarified the terms of a possible political run even further: “I’ve said it very clearly. If the Republican Party can unify and get their act together, I would spend the money and run,” The Daily Mail reported.
Mr. Trump said he needs the state’s party leaders to rally behind him — and keep any GOP challengers off the ballot, The Daily Mail reported.
Other runs Mr. Trump has mulled in the past include a race for the governor in 2006 and for the White House in 2000, in 2004 and again in 2008.
