NEW YORK (AP) - Columbia University’s president has announced new policies intended to make more transparent its procedures for handling sexual and gender-based sexual assaults on campus.

President Lee Bollinger’s statement Wednesday followed months of student complaints on how the institution investigates and punishes such cases.

The New York Times (https://nyti.ms/1dQsEqy ) says Bollinger said “aggregate, anonymous data related to sexual assault” will be released with the current academic year. He says the change will “require a delicate balancing of confidentiality and transparency.”

He didn’t elaborate. A spokesman said it was premature to go into details because conversations with students, administrators and experts were just beginning.

In response to a call for town-hall-style discussions about sexual assault policy, Bollinger said deans were considering how best to convene them.

Students called the announcement a significant development.
