POMONA, Calif. (AP) - The president of Cal Poly Pomona, Michael Ortiz, says he’ll retire to spend more time with his family after suffering a minor stroke over the summer.

The Ontario Daily Bulletin (https://bit.ly/1frlRIH ) says Ortiz, who’s 66, sent employees an email on Thursday that said his “recent health scare” contributed to the decision.
The Cal State chancellor’s office says that during his tenure, the school saw an increase in graduation rates, completed significant building projects, and received a $42 million donation - the largest cash gift in the history of the Cal State system.
Chancellor Timothy White calls Ortiz a “tireless champion” for Latinos and other under-represented students who touched the lives of thousands of students.
