GREENWOOD, Miss. (AP) - The Leflore County Board of Supervisors has fired the company it hired 14 months ago to collect fine for the justice court.

The Greenwood Commonwealth reports (https://bit.ly/1dOD0af) that the board voted 4-1 this week to give Judicial Correction Services Inc. 30 days’ notice of the termination of their contract.

Supervisors Wayne Self and Robert Moore have argued the monthly fees the company charges defendants who haven’t paid off fines - up to $40 per month - amount to an unfair double penalty.

The board’s decision isn’t binding on the justice court. The justice court refers defendants to the probation and collection service.

County Administrator Sam Abraham says the contract wasn’t actually necessary, and the supervisors don’t have authority over the court.
