PHOENIX (AP) - Federal authorities are trying to figure out who is behind the shooting of two burros northwest of Phoenix.
The Bureau of Land Management says a resident reported Sunday the discovery of two mature burros west of Castle Hot Springs Road.
Authorities believe the shooting occurred around 2 p.m.
The shooting took place within the BLM’s Lake Pleasant Herd Management Area in Maricopa County.
Rem Hawes, the BLM’s Hassayampa Field Manager, says officers are asking for anyone who saw or heard anything Sunday afternoon to come forward.
Wild burros and horses are protected under the Wild Free - Roaming Horses and Burros Act of 1971.
Suspects in the shooting could face up to one year in jail and a $2,000 fine.
