NEW YORK (AP) - The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has ordered four airlines at LaGuardia and Kennedy airports to raise wages by $1 an hour for workers making $9 or less per hour.
The agency’s director, Patrick Foye, called for the raise in a letter to American, Delta, JetBLue and United. He said it should eventually go up to $10.10 per hour.
Foye also told the airlines to grant the airport workers’ request to make Martin Luther King Jr. Day a paid holiday.
He acted after President Barack Obama announced in his State of the Union address Tuesday that he was signing an executive order increasing the minimum wage for future federal contractors to $10.10 an hour.
