CORPUS CHRISTI, Texas (AP) - Three oil workers have been killed and a group of children injured when a van slammed into the back of a school bus in South Texas.

The collision occurred shortly before 7 a.m. Thursday as the Three Rivers school district bus was attempting to make a turn. Superintendent Kenneth Rohrbach says the bus was stopped as it waited for another vehicle to turn and make way for the bus.

Investigators say the driver of the van may have fallen asleep. The workers were returning home after completing a shift. KRIS-TV in Corpus Christi reports there were seven people in the van. The other four were taken to hospitals.

Rohrbach says there were 12 students on the bus who suffered bumps and bruises. At least three were taken to a hospital for observation.
