Hey, what’s that fox meat doing in my donkey burger? Wal-Mart China has risen to the challenge of that fictional question and pulled all its tainted donkey meat — a delicacy in the Asian market — from store shelves.
United Press International reported that Wal-Mart’s donkey-meat supplier, Dezhou Fujude Foods Co. Ltd., was under investigation for food safety violations. The supplier also faces criminal charges.
Wal-Mart has pulled its product and is mulling legal action.
“While this appears to be an isolated incident to select stores in China, our customers’ trust is paramount for our business and we are deeply sorry for this incident,” the company said in a statement, adding that it takes food fraud “very seriously.”
Wal-Mart said it was going “beyond what local law requires” in such instances and is adding DNA tests to its sample tests of meat products in China “to ensure high quality and safety of the products sold.”
