Out with the old, in with the new. General Mills’ New Year’s announcement is that its iconic Cheerios cereal — the regular, original flavor only — will now be made without genetically modified ingredients.
WHEC in Rochester reported that the GMO-free batches will start appearing on store shelves soon.
The GMO-free status only applies to the company’s original Cheerios, not the Apple Cinnamon, Honey Nut or other flavors. Consumers will see the difference right on the box label.
General Mills said the original-flavored Cheerios will include the label on the boxes: “Not Made With Genetically Modified Ingredients.”
General Mills said Cheerios original-flavored cereal is already made with oats that are non-GMO. But now all the ingredients in the food, including cornstarch and sugar, will be GMO-free.
The company also issued a warning that traces of GMO product could still be found in the new batches, due to contamination during processing and manufacturing, WHEC reported.
