CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) - University of Illinois Board of Trustees Chairman Christopher Kennedy and President Robert Easter say derogatory remarks directed by some Urbana-Champaign students at Chancellor Phyllis Wise were disgraceful.

Many of the hundreds of comments were profane that were made via social media after Wise decided against calling off classes during bitterly cold weather Monday. Some included insults about Wise’s Asian ancestry.

Kennedy and Easter said in a statement emailed to students, faculty and staff that students had the right to disagree. But the two administrators said the worst of the comments “have brought disgrace to the institution.”

Earlier Student Senate President Damani Bolden apologized to Wise. The chancellor hasn’t publicly commented.

School officials have said they have no plans to try to discipline students who made the comments.
