CAPE TOWN, South Africa (AP) - South Africa’s Olympic committee says its patience is wearing thin as it waits for help from the IAAF in solving a dispute in the country’s track federation.
The South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC) suspended Athletics South Africa (ASA) last year after its leadership was ousted and replaced by an interim board. The former leadership claims it is still recognized by the IAAF.
SASCOC says the IAAF “promised in the first quarter of last year to come and resolve the situation,” but an official twice failed to travel to South Africa for talks.
SASCOC said Wednesday it was lifting the suspension it placed on ASA, which might have prevented athletes like former world champion Caster Semenya from competing at the Commonwealth Games in July and August.
