DETROIT (AP) - Detroit Police Chief James Craig has ordered an internal investigation into a tussling incident involving WJBK-TV reporter M.L. Elrick and officers assigned to the City Council.
Police say in a release Wednesday that a preliminary review of station video suggests a supervisor and officer “went beyond proper protocols.”
Elrick says he was trying to interview Council President Pro Tem George Cushingberry Jr. Tuesday before a public meeting at a church when the officers shoved him away. The sergeant has been reassigned pending the probe’s outcome.
Cushingberry was ticketed earlier this month for failing to signal a turn. Officers found alcohol and marijuana in the car. Cushingberry’s passenger was licensed to use medical marijuana.
Craig has said Cushingberry apparently received preferential treatment in that incident and a supervisor faces discipline.
