NETTLETON, Miss. (AP) - The superintendent of the Nettleton School District has resigned.

After meeting in closed session for about an hour Tuesday night, the school board voted to accept the resignation of Russell Taylor as superintendent, effective Feb. 1.

Taylor told the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (https://bit.ly/1niHLBD ) after discussions with the board, it was clear he had not been able to achieve the academic results that the students of the district deserve” and that the board felt new leadership was needed.

Nettleton received a “D’’ rating from the Mississippi Department of Education this year, based on results of state tests taken by students last school year.

Nettleton School Board President Rhonda Patterson said the board hopes to have a permanent superintendent in place by the start of the next school year.
