AURORA, Ill. (AP) - Charges have been filed against the driver of a semi-trailer truck that plowed into an Illinois State Police cruiser on Interstate 88 in Aurora, killing an Illinois Tollway worker and injuring a state trooper. The victims were assisting a disabled truck.

The Monday accident killed 39-year-old maintenance worker Vincent Petrella. State police spokeswoman Monique Bond says Trooper Douglas Balder is in critical but stable condition at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood.

Bond says Renato Velasquez of Hanover Park is charged with operating a commercial vehicle while impaired, failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident, and failure to yield to emergency vehicles. The collision pushed the cruiser into the back of a tollway vehicle.

Bond says Velasquez is being held in DuPage County Jail awaiting a Wednesday bond hearing.
