RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina state and local governments could get up to $43 million in additional revenues annually now that Internet retailer Amazon will start collecting sales tax on items purchased online from within the state.
The General Assembly’s top staff economist told a legislative committee the state could see $20 million to $30 million more annually, while cities and counties could get $10 million to $13 million more in their coffers.
Amazon announced it will begin charging sales taxes on purchases made in North Carolina starting Feb. 1. Customers are required to pay taxes for online purchases, but the requirement is often not enforced by out-of-state retailers.
The combined local and state sales tax most consumers pay is 6.75 percent. The percentage is slightly higher in about 25 counties.
