KETCHIKAN, Alaska (AP) - There are no significant changes planned to the Navy’s only West Coast facility that measures underwater sounds made by submarines.
However, the U.S. Navy still must file a draft Environmental Impact Statement on the Southeast Alaska Acoustic Measurement Facility, which is located in Behm Canal near Ketchikan, along with other Navy military training and testing activities in the Northwest, KRBD reported (https://is.gd/j0ztDd ).
Public comments on the draft statement are being accepted through March 25, and the Navy will hold a public hearing March 11 in Ketchikan.
“It will provide a really good overview if people don’t have time to read through the whole document. It’s pretty lengthy,” Navy spokeswoman Liane Nakahara said.
Subject matter experts will be on hand at the Southeast Alaska Discovery Center in Ketchikan to answer questions. People can also give comments during the meeting, or be provided a form to submit written comments.
