JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missouri Gov. Jay Nixon has denied clemency for 56-year-old Herbert Smulls, condemned to death for the 1991 killing of a St. Louis County jeweler during a robbery.

Nixon’s office announced the decision late Tuesday afternoon. Smulls is scheduled to receive a lethal injection at 12:01 a.m. Wednesday.

Nixon said in a statement that Smulls shot and killed Stephen Honickman and seriously wounded Honickman’s wife in “a cold-blooded and deliberate manner.” Nixon called Smulls a “career criminal” and says that he was arrested with stolen jewelry. The governor says the crimes were “brutal.”
