LAS VEGAS (AP) - Nevada Congressman Steven Horsford says his guest for the State of the Union address will be a woman who’s two weeks away from losing her unemployment benefits.
Horsford says his constituent Tamika Woods will join him for President Barack Obama’s speech Tuesday evening.
The congressman says Woods moved to Nevada to work in the construction industry nearly 13 years ago, but hasn’t had consistent work since July 2011 and has been unemployed since May 2013.
He says Woods left Nevada to seek work in California, but was unable to find it and has since returned. She uses the benefits to pay for food, rent and gas for traveling to job interviews.
Horsford has called for Congress to extend unemployment insurance for the long-term unemployed.
