INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Adult bookstores in Indianapolis would be able to stay open on Sundays under a court decision.

The 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has overturned a lower court ruling that upheld a 2003 city ordinance requiring adult bookstores to be closed on Sundays and between the hours or midnight and 10 a.m. other days.

The Indianapolis Star reports (https://indy.st/1k2rPRq ) the ruling Friday came in a lawsuit by four adult bookstores, one of which is now out of business.

The bookstores’ attorney called the decision a victory for free speech.

Indianapolis mayoral spokesman Marc Lotter says the city will explore its options.

City attorneys had argued the ordinance would help prevent crime, but the court called that justification weak and compared it to banning Sunday newspapers.
