AMARILLO, Texas (AP) - Eleven security guards have been fired at the nation’s only nuclear weapons assembly and dismantling plant after staging what their employer says was an illegal sickout earlier this month.

The Amarillo Globe-News (https://bit.ly/MpMDXG ) reports that the president of the guards’ union at Pantex denies the plant contractor’s allegation and is taking the case to the National Labor Relations Board, a federal agency that investigates labor claims.

The contractor, B&W Pantex, filed an unfair labor practice charge with the board last week after the guards called in sick Jan. 21, allegedly to avoid a drill scheduled for that night. In the filing the contractor contends the union knew about the sickout and failed to stop it.

The contractor in a statement said the plant, 17 miles northeast of Amarillo, remained safe.
