CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) - University of Virginia President Teresa A. Sullivan has donated her mother’s nursing cape to the university’s nursing school.
Sullivan’s mother, Mary Elizabeth Finnegan, enlisted in the Army Nurse Corps shortly after Pearl Harbor was attacked by the Japanese in 1941. She served in the European Theater in World War II.
After the war ended, Sullivan says her mother worked with patients at veterans hospitals.
Sullivan’s mother died in 1980.
The university said Monday that Sullivan recently gave her mother’s cape to the U.Va. School of Nursing’s Eleanor Crowder Bjoring Center for Nursing Historical Inquiry. The center’s nursing memorabilia includes thousands of personal items and documents.
