SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Salt Lake City Democrat Luz Robles hears hundreds of proposals each year in her post as a state senator.
But the lawmaker appeared shocked Monday when longtime boyfriend and Arizona lawmaker Juan Carlos Escamilla stepped onto the Senate floor, got down on one knee and asked her to marry him.
San Luis Democrat Escamilla popped the question on the first day of Utah’s 2014 legislative session after Senate leaders granted him permission to walk on the floor.
State Democratic Party Chair Jim Dabakis congratulated Robles in a statement and welcomed Escamilla should he move to Utah.
Senate President Wayne Niederhauser captured the moment with a photo he posted on his Facebook page. He wrote in a caption that the event was an exciting start to the 2014 session.
