MADISON, Wis. (AP) - Retiring Wisconsin state Sen. Dale Schultz is refusing to endorse fellow Republican Howard Marklein in the race for the seat Schultz is leaving.
The conservative Marklein announced in April that he was going to run for the seat that the moderate Schultz has held since 1991. Schultz on Monday said he would not seek re-election, but he declined to endorse Marklein, saying he is “out of step” with the views of constituents in his southwestern Wisconsin district.
Marklein said he was running against Schultz because he voted against a mining bill last year and the Act 10 union law in 2011. But Schultz says his votes represented views of his constituents on those issues.
Marklein praised Schultz on Monday, saying he will be missed by Republicans and Democrats alike.
