RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - A race that will determine the balance of power in the Virginia Senate is headed to a recount.
The recount is set to begin Monday in the Hampton Roads Senate District 6. Republican businessman Wayne Coleman asked for the recount after he trailed Delegate Lynwood Lewis Jr. by nine votes out of more than 20,000 cast in a special election.
Both are seeking to succeed fellow Democrat Ralph Northam, who left the Senate to successfully run for lieutenant governor.
The district includes Norfolk, a small section of Virginia Beach and the Eastern Shore.
If Lewis’ edge holds, the Senate will be split 20-20 with Northam casting the vote on ties. Republicans have firm control of the House of Delegates.
