COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) - South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley has signed a long-sought government restructuring bill into law.
The measure being called the largest overhaul of state government in 20 years became law with Haley’s signature Monday. She had planned to publicly sign the bill Wednesday. But the cancellation of this week’s legislative session due to forecasts of wintry weather caused her office to reschedule that ceremony.
The law divides the Budget and Control Board’s wide-ranging divisions among several new and existing agencies. Most of the agency’s workers will transfer to the new, Cabinet-level Department of Administration. That gives the governor oversight of bureaucratic functions of government such as fleet and property management, mail, human resources and technology services.
The Budget and Control Board name ceases to exist in summer 2015.
