EXETER, Neb. (AP) - A husband and wife who run a gun shop in Exeter have failed to pay sales taxes and owe back incomes taxes, state officials say.
Rob and Hope Androyna, of Exeter, each face five felony charges in Lancaster County Court, the Lincoln Journal Star reported (https://bit.ly/Ml8ijP ).
The Nebraska Department of Revenue said the Androynas took in $3.78 million from their Exeter Arms business from 2009 through 2012. That included nearly $200,000 in local and state sales taxes that they allegedly didn’t send in to the state.
The details were in an affidavit by Revenue Inspector Marcus Ford, written in support of warrants. The couple was arrested on Jan. 16. They later each posted 10 percent of $2,500 bonds.
The state alleges the Androynas didn’t report profit, income or wages from their business until October 2013, when the revenue department was already investigating them.
A home phone listed for the Androynas rang unanswered on Monday. Their attorney didn’t immediately return a call from The Associated Press.
No federal charges have been filed against the couple. A spokesman for the Internal Revenue Service told the newspaper that federal law prohibits the agency from commenting on individual taxpayer cases.
The state revenue department estimates the couple owes more than $479,000 for both back sales taxes and income taxes. This includes penalties for both types of taxes.
The Androynas started their gun business from their Exeter home in 2006 before opening up a store in 2011. They often sold products at gun shows.
