DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) - An Oregon-based company that makes doors will close its wood fiber production plant in Dubuque and lay off 52 workers.
Jeld-Wen Inc. said Monday the Dubuque plant will close March 28 as part of a downsizing. The company says it has “ample production capacity” at other U.S. locations.
The Telegraph Herald (https://bit.ly/1i4Jibe) reports that employees have been invited to transfer to other Jeld-Wen plants, including one in Grinnell. Employees who are unable or unwilling to transfer will receive severance packages.
Greater Dubuque Development Corporation head Rick Dickinson says it’s “devastating news” for workers, some of whom have been very long-term employees. He says Jeld-Wen was hard hit by the downturn in the housing market.
Jeld-Wen in 1978 acquired the plant, which makes material used in the construction of interior doors.
