PITTSBURGH (AP) - State Auditor General Eugene DePasquale says his office will audit the Pittsburgh Public Schools because he’s concerned district officials believe they could go bankrupt by 2016.

DePasquale says he hopes the audit will “do more than simply point out problems.” Rather, he’s hoping to work with the district, the mayor’s office and others to fix the district’s finances.

Among other things, DePasquale is concerned about the district’s budget deficit, falling enrollment, the level of it state subsidies and how much the district is paying to educate city students who attend charter schools.

District spokeswoman Ebony Pugh says they look forward to any recommendations DePasquale may make.

DePasquale says the goal of the audit is to identify a “solution to these challenges.”
