SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (AP) - A master’s student in the public affairs reporting program at the University of Illinois at Springfield has been hired by The Associated Press to help cover state government in Illinois and the 2014 legislative session.

Chacour Koop is a former special projects reporter for the student newspaper at Eastern Illinois University, where he reported on faculty pensions and hiring and firing by the school administration.

He also was captain of the university’s varsity swim team before graduating from Eastern in May 2013.

The 24-year-old Koop has held a reporting internship with the Newton Kansan, and is a member of the Society for Collegiate Journalists.
