FLORIDA GOVERNOR WANTS MORE MONEY FOR SCHOOLS

Florida Gov. Rick Scott wants more money for public schools in the next budget, but he’s not asking for as big an increase as in 2013. Scott outlined his budget in Delray Beach on Monday. He’s asking state legislators to increase spending on public schools by $542 million.

FLORIDA CONGRESSMAN RESIGNS AFTER DRUG SCANDAL

Facing a House ethics investigation, U.S. Rep. Trey Radel on Monday announced his impending resignation in a letter to House Speaker John Boehner. He pleaded guilty on Nov. 20 to a misdemeanor charge of cocaine possession and was sentenced to a year of probation.

CANADIAN TOURIST FOUND DEAD IN HOLLYWOOD

Officials in Hollywood are investigating the death of a Canadian tourist. His body was found on a Hollywood street early Sunday. He had been stabbed.

SCOTT SEEKS 15-DAY HURRICANE SUPPLY TAX HOLIDAY

Floridians would get a 15-day sales tax holiday on hurricane preparedness supplies ranging from portable generators to radios this coming June under a proposal outlined Monday by Gov. Rick Scott. Scott, making the announcement at a Miami lumber and hardware store, said the measure would save taxpayers about $20 million and is part of the Republican governor’s overall plan to cut taxes by $500 million this year.

MAN GETS NEARLY 14 YEARS IN ABORTION PILL CASE

A Tampa man has been sentenced to 13 years and eight months in prison for tricking his pregnant ex-girlfriend into taking a pill he believed would cause her to have a miscarriage. A federal judge sentenced John Andrew Welden on Monday. The man pleaded guilty in September to tampering with a consumer product and conspiracy to commit mail fraud.
