SIGULDA, Latvia (AP) - Armin Zoeggeler of Italy won the final luge race of the World Cup season Sunday, the 57th victory of his career on the circuit.
The 40-year-old Zoeggeler was fastest in both heats, finishing with a combined two-run time of 1 minute, 35.913 seconds. He was 0.106 seconds faster than Johannes Ludwig of Germany and 0.313 seconds faster than Italy’s Dominik Fischnaller.
World Cup champion Felix Loch of Germany was among a handful of competitors who skipped the race, focusing instead on preparing for next month’s Olympics in Sochi.
For the U.S., Chris Mazdzer placed seventh, 0.654 seconds off the winning time. Mazdzer was the lone American in the field, with Tucker West and Aidan Kelly off to compete in the junior world championships before heading to Sochi.
