LOS ANGELES (AP) - Chasson Randle scored seven of his 17 points in overtime, and Stanford beat Southern California 79-71 Sunday to avenge two close losses to the Trojans last season.
Josh Huestis scored 16 points and Dwight Powell added 14 for the Cardinal (13-6, 4-3 Pac-12), who won for just the second time in its last 18 road games against UCLA and USC. The Cardinal has gone 0-9 against the Bruins and 2-7 against the Trojans in Los Angeles since the beginning of the 2005-06 season.
The Trojans swept both games last season by a total of three points.
Byron Wesley led the Trojans (10-10, 1-6) with 18 points. J.T. Terrell and Pe’Shon Howard added 13 each and Strahinja Gavrilovic scored a career-high 12 for the Trojans.
The Cardinal scored the first four points of overtime on a free throw by Anthony Brown and a 3-pointer by Randle to go ahead for good. Reserve John Gage, who scored 12 points, added four in a row to make it 71-64 with 2:26 left and the Trojans didn’t threaten after that.
Huestis made a 3-pointer with 1:30 remaining in the second half to give Stanford a 61-56 lead, but a 3-pointer by Howard with 33.2 seconds left and two foul shots by Wesley with 21.6 seconds to play after an unforced turnover by Brown tied the game at 61, forcing overtime.
The Trojans outscored the Cardinal 8-0 in the first three minutes of the second half for a 36-32 lead, but Gage scored eight points to highlight a 17-7 run that put the Cardinal on top 49-43.
A 3-pointer by Terrell and five straight points by Omar Oraby gave the Trojans a 51-49 lead with 7½ minutes to play, but the Cardinal scored the next nine points for a six-point advantage with just under four minutes left. However, USC rallied to force the overtime.
The Cardinal shot 5-of-7 in the first five minutes while taking a 12-4 lead, which turned out to be the largest of the game for either team. Randle didn’t contribute, missing his only shot and picking up two fouls to send him to the bench.
Randle, the Pac-12’s third-leading scorer with a 19.2-point average, sat out seven minutes and the Trojans took advantage, outscoring the Cardinal 13-4 to go on top 17-16.
Randle scored his first points with 2:34 left before halftime on a short bank shot that gave Stanford a 25-23 lead. He added a 3-pointer and two foul shots in the final 1:16 of the half, which ended with the Cardinal on top 32-28.
Stanford has used the same starting lineup in each of its 19 games: Powell, Randle, Huestis, Nastic and Anthony Brown. Oraby, who had nine points, is the only USC player to start each of his team’s 20 games.
