RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) - North Carolina’s NAACP says it will push Republican Sen. Richard Burr to fill a judicial vacancy in one of the state’s federal district courts.
The Rev. William Barber said during a meeting Saturday that he wants Burr to allow the process of selecting a new judge to go forward.
North Carolina’s eastern judicial district has had a vacancy since the start of 2006. President Barack Obama nominated Jennifer May-Parker, a federal prosecutor in the 44-county district that stretches from Raleigh to the coast.
But Burr hasn’t acted since June to clear May-Parker for a Senate hearing on the lifetime job.
Barber’s comments Saturday topped the list of the NAACP’s five-point action plan for 2014. Next month, the group is planning a march in Raleigh.
