BOGALUSA, La. (AP) - The City Council may call a special election to change the city charter’s mandate for the date the mayor, council members and city prosecutor take office after each election.
The Daily News reported (https://bit.ly/1aRNR3w) an ordinance to do so was introduced at this past week’s council meeting.
The Bogalusa charter now requires that city officials are to be sworn into office on the first Monday of the December following the election.
In 2014, the general election is scheduled for Dec. 6, five days after the first Monday of the month and almost a full year before the following December.
According to the proposed charter change, officials would take office on the Jan. 1 following the election.
If approved, the special election to seek voter authorization of the amendment would be on May 3.
A public hearing on the proposed ordinance will be held during the City Council’s meeting on Feb. 3.
