LAKE ARIEL, Pa. (AP) - State environmental officials say improper chemical treatment of algae blooms caused a fish kill in northeastern Pennsylvania.

The Times-Tribune (https://bit.ly/1jvq8hD ) reports about 10,000 fish died in Lake Ariel in Wayne County last summer.

The Department of Environmental Protection issued a violation Wednesday to Bill Greggs, director of the lake’s community association.

According to the citation, the association hired a New Jersey company to kill algae blooms in July. Officials say the firm did not follow proper application procedures for copper sulfate.

Greggs said Friday that he had not yet received the violation. He says hot weather might have contributed to the fish kill.

The state Fish and Boat Commission settled last month with the company, which was fined $1,000.
