NEW ROADS, La. (AP) - The City Council has approved a five-year contract with Republic Services for residential trash pickup that is expected to cut monthly fees for the city’s 1,800 customers by 50 cents.

As part of the deal for twice-a-week collection, which was approved this past week, New Roads residents will have recycling service available and receive 95-gallon trash bins at no additional charge.

The Advocate reported (https://bit.ly/1hiKN4k) the bins will be delivered to residences starting around the beginning of February.

The City Council approved the contract, which is effective March 1, about four months after informing the Pointe Coupee Parish Police Jury that the city was opting out of its five-year contract with Progressive Waste Solutions.

Mayor Robert Myer has said he was confident the city could secure a cheaper rate and provide more services, including recycling.

He said the city received three proposals for trash service. He recommended Republic Services to the council.

“We hope this puts to rest any science fiction out there that we’d charge our residents more money to do this,” Myer said.
