MANITOWOC, Wis. (AP) - Manitowoc County reduced the number of employee spouses that it insures by more than half under new rules for health care coverage, according to a report released this week.
County supervisors approved rules in the county’s 2014 budget barring working spouses from receiving coverage if they can buy insurance through their own employers for $249 per month or less.
A report released by Manitowoc County’s personnel department showed 126 spouses were no longer eligible for coverage under those rules, HTR Media reported Friday (https://htrne.ws/1mC069z ).
About 100 spouses remain eligible for the county’s insurance. Personnel Director Sharon Cornils said most of those spouses do not have access to affordable health care coverage through their employers.
Many private companies stopped insuring spouses who were eligible for insurance through their employers as the new health care law went into effect.
County Executive Bob Ziegelbauer noted when he proposed the rule changes that the new health care law’s requirement that the county insure employees’ dependents does not apply to spouses.
