NEWARK, Del. (AP) - U.S. Sen. Tom Carper is joining University of Delaware officials in celebrating the achievements of a UD professor who recently won a presidential “green chemistry” award.

Richard Wool was recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency last month with the Presidential Green Chemistry Challenge Award.

Carper planned to tour Wool’s lab on Friday for a demonstration of his products.

The award recognizes Wool’s work in creating high-performance materials from renewable bio-based feedstocks such as vegetable oils, chicken feathers and flax that can be used as adhesives, composites, foams, and other products.

His more recent work includes a collaborative effort to develop a breathable, bio-based leather substitute.
