NEWARK, N.J. (AP) - Federal officials say screeners at U.S. airports detected a record number of weapons in 2013.
The Transportation Security Administration said Friday its employees found 1,813 firearms last year, an increase of more than 250 over 2012.
Included in that number were 21 firearms taken at airports in New York and New Jersey.
Of those, 10 were stopped at JFK, five at Newark Liberty, four at LaGuardia and two at Atlantic City International Airport.
A TSA spokeswoman says nearly 1,500 of the guns stopped nationwide were loaded when they were discovered.
