DETROIT (AP) - Detroit’s police chief says a city council member may have received preferential treatment when officers discovered alcohol and marijuana during a traffic stop.
Police Chief James Craig says evidence wasn’t taken from George Cushingberry Jr.’s car after he and a friend were pulled over on Jan. 7.
Craig says Cushingberry identified himself as a councilman and showed his city identification. He was ticketed for failing to signal a turn but wasn’t given a sobriety test. Cushingberry’s passenger was licensed to use medical marijuana.
No driver’s license or proof of insurance were shown. Craig says a sergeant faces disciplinary action.
Cushingberry insists he wasn’t drunk and was a victim of racial profiling. Detroit’s office of inspector general is investigating Cushingberry’s conduct.
