VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (AP) - Former automotive executive and Norfolk philanthropist Joshua Darden Jr. has died at the age of 77.
The Virginian-Pilot reports (https://bit.ly/1jJjBNT) that Darden passed away Wednesday in Virginia Beach. He had suffered from Parkinson’s disease for several years.
Darden grew up in Norfolk and graduated from Episcopal High School in Alexandria. He played lacrosse and majored in English at the University of Virginia.
After serving for a year as a paratrooper in the Army, Darden returned to Norfolk in 1959 and joined his father’s auto business.
Darden sold the business in 1994 and focused on civic activities. He served as rector of U.Va.’s Board of Visitors in the late 1980s.
Darden also helped create the ACCESS College Foundation in 1988. It helps low-income students from the region find aid for college.
