LEWISTON, Idaho (AP) - The Nez Perce County Jail has hired more jailers as officials look to increase the inmate population.

Sheriff Joe Rodriguez tells the Lewiston Tribune (https://bit.ly/1l5l19z) he’s working on contracts to house more inmates and inmates with longer sentences.

The sheriff’s office hired three additional jailers last year and has received approval to hire three more this year at a cost of $172,000.

The jail has a capacity of 152 inmates. The county receives $40 to $60 a day for housing inmates from other jurisdictions.

The jail has had two suicides in less than a year. The most recent suicide in July led the sheriff’s office to overhaul jail staff schedules and hire additional staff.
