President Obama revived his internal White House political operation Friday in preparation for the 2014 mid-term elections, naming longtime aide David Simas as director of political strategy and outreach.
Mr. Simas, who played a key role in the president’s reelection campaign, served much of last year in the West Wing coordinating the administration’s message on Obamacare. He will become the president’s point person for working with Democrats on the midterms, which Mr. Obama has called crucial to implementing his agenda over his final two years in office.
In 2009-1010, Mr. Simas served as White House political director. Prior to joining the Obama administration, he was an aide to Massachusetts Gov. Deval Patrick.
The White House announced several other staff changes Friday. Broderick Johnson was named assistant to the president and Cabinet secretary; press aide Amy Brundage was appointed deputy assistant to the president and deputy communications director; Anne Wall was named deputy assistant to the president for legislative affairs and Senate liaison; and Amy Rosenbaum was chosen deputy assistant to the president for legislative affairs.
