EAST LANSING, Mich. (AP) - Michigan State University has agreed to pay graduate teaching assistants more than $100,000 in back wages after a work dispute.
The Lansing State Journal reports (https://on.lsj.com/1hmEMnj ) the employment period for summer term laid out in the East Lansing school’s contract with its Graduate Employees Union overlaps by a few days with those of spring and summer terms.
Teaching assistants working on two classes during those periods of overlap last summer were paid for only one.
The union, which represents about 1,400 teaching assistants, filed grievances. An agreement resolving the dispute was signed Wednesday.
Union President Dan Clark says 345 teaching assistants will get a total of about $115,000. He says the solution “worked for both of us.”
University spokesman Kent Cassella says the school is pleased a resolution was reached.
