WASHINGTON (AP) - The full D.C. Council will get its first chance to debate a bill that would provide city students with up to $60,000 to attend college.
The scholarship program known as the D.C. Promise would cost the city up to $60 million a year. It was introduced by Councilmember David Catania, an independent who’s considering a run for mayor.
The grants would go to students in public, charter and private schools. Students from families with incomes of up to $215,000 would be eligible for some aid under the proposal, with the largest scholarships going to less affluent students.
The bill will be debated Thursday by the council’s Committee of the Whole. The committee will also take up a measure to decriminalize possession of small amounts of marijuana.
