CHICAGO (AP) - Chicago is launching a citywide celebration of the Chinese New Year, complete with light displays and a fireworks show at Navy Pier.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel and Choose Chicago, the city’s tourism agency, announced the events Wednesday.

This year Chinese New Year falls on Jan. 31. The year of the horse will be celebrated during a two-week period.

Emanuel says the festivities are “a wonderful way to bring together Chicagoans from around the city while attracting visitors from around the world.”

The mayor says he hopes the event will grow to eventually be the largest Chinese New Year celebration in North America.

Don Welsh is president of Choose Chicago. He says the festivities will be heavily promoted around the U.S. and overseas, especially in China.
