BOULDER, Colo. (AP) - The University Corporation for Atmospheric Research has signed an agreement to continue managing the Boulder-based National Center for Atmospheric Research for five years.

The deal was announced Thursday.

The corporation manages NCAR for the National Science Foundation.

NCAR, based in Boulder, researches weather, air quality, the upper atmosphere, the sun and the social effects of weather and climate.

The corporation is a consortium of more than 100 North American universities with Ph.D. programs in atmospheric sciences and related disciplines. It’s also based in Boulder.

NCAR and the corporation have a combined staff of about 1,400. The corporation says they contributed about $420 million to the state economy in fiscal 2012.
